What Is Gradual Tan?

If you’ve ever headed to a tanning salon, you’re probably very familiar with spray tan products. If you’re a regular self-tanner, tanning mousses have likely been your go-to. These fake tanning products generally deliver a deep, dark tan that develops over a number of hours.

So, what is gradual tan? It works a little differently from the products we just mentioned. Gradual tan is a buildable product, meaning you’ll work your way up to a natural bronze by applying the product daily. With gradual tan, your skin won’t be immediately infused with that rich tan that comes from spray or mousse products. Instead, gradual tan works to create a subtle, golden glow over a few days.

Why do we love gradual tan? Gradual tan comes in a lotion form which is designed to glide onto the skin evenly, preventing any streakiness, patchiness, or uneven applications. It’s also a slow burn product where you’ll work your way up to your glow, so you also won’t have to worry about coming out orange.

Our Gradual Tan Formula

We’ve worked hard to create a fake tan formula that is natural, organic, and Australian-made with ingredients sourced locally from Tasmania. So, in a nutshell, our Three Warriors Gradual Tan contains only the good stuff and none of the nasties.

All Three Warriors products are certified organic, Australian Certified Toxic-Free, and Cruelty-Free. They contain Chamomile Extract and Aloe Vera which reduce inflammation, as well as Olive, Avocado, and Coconut oils which help to hydrate the skin, leaving you feeling smooth and silky. Our formulas are also rich in Vitamins A, D, and E.

Can You Put Gradual Tan On Your Face?

So, do you put gradual tan on your face? You absolutely can, and you should! Some tanning products contain certain fragrances, chemicals, and alcohols that can irritate the delicate skin on the face and around the eyes. But we’re not about that here at Three Warriors.

We are not advocates for a tanning solution that can only be applied from the neck down. For a seamless fake tan, the product should be applied from head to toe. Plus, remember those hydrating and nourishing vitamin-rich ingredients we mentioned? Don’t deprive the skin on your face of all that goodness. Our products are designed to be used on the face and body to ensure the most natural-looking, sun-kissed glow.

Gradual tan is also applied with your hands which offers a little more precision than a tanning mitt. This is particularly important around those tricky areas like the nose, eyes, and ears.

How To Apply Gradual Tan To The Face

We love that gradual tan requires no extra application equipment. You just need your hands! As for how to apply gradual tan to the face, the steps closely mimic what you do when tanning the rest of the body.

The Day Before You Tan

  • Wax, pluck, or thread first - If you’re into removing the hair on your face, it’s best to do this at least a day or two before you apply gradual tan, depending on the method of hair removal. Waxing and threading can leave the skin feeling sensitive, so it’s a good idea to let your skin breathe a bit before applying your tan.

  • Exfoliate - It’s best to exfoliate your face the day before you apply your tan. This will help to remove any dead skin cells, which will prevent any unwanted tan patches or clogging. Exfoliating will also leave your skin smooth and ready for application. We recommend our Three Warriors Tasmanian Sand Scrub for a smooth, refreshing finish. After you exfoliate, make sure to moisturize your face to prevent your skin from feeling dry.

  • The Day Of Your Tan

  • Shower, cleanse, but don’t moisturize - Right before you begin tanning, jump in the shower and rinse off any perfumes, deodorants, or moisturizers that may be clinging to the skin. You basically want a blank canvas to work on. Make sure to cleanse your face to rid your pores of any dirt or residue. Remember not to moisturize once you jump out of the shower - you’ll want your skin to be bare so that your gradual tan can glide on effortlessly.
  • Off we glow - Now, you’re ready to go. Apply a small amount of gradual tan to your face and use your hands to work the product into the skin evenly. Be sure to cover all bases — that includes your ears and neck!

  • Remember, good things come to those who wait. A gradual tan is exactly that: gradual. So, don’t be tempted to lather on layer upon layer when your bronze doesn’t appear immediately. After two days, that beautiful natural glow will start to show through.

How To Maintain Your Gradual Tan

Your skincare routine is likely to be more involved for your face, so you may find that the gradual tan on your face fades more quickly than it does on the rest of your body.

If this happens, you can apply a layer in the morning and again later that same day for a boost. We wouldn’t recommend a double application every day - only for those days where you feel your face needs a bit more colour to match the rest of your body. You could also try spritzing on our Three Warriors Face Tan Water on top of your Three Warriors Gradual Tan to deepen your face glow.
